Rhett created these life sized human figures out of steel which he coiled on a "machine" that he built himself. The faces began with wooden faces that he hand carved and then a mold was taken and this face was poured into that mold. The medallions hanging from the figures are shards of pottery , glass and stone that he has dug . Read an article written by Bill Hankins at http://homepage.mac.com/kellybuntin/files/Rhett_screen.pdf on my website. Bill talks in depth about Rhett's archeological endeavors to find art supplies. All of these figures ( and there are four) were part of a museum installation entitled "Marooned". After the show, the figures moved back to the farm. This one sat by the pond for a summer.
This figure is now seated on the freshly refinished front porch of the house where he will reside til the barn swallows return next spring.
Here is a close up of one of the faces. I will show the remaining two guardians in a future posting.
