What's He Building ?

No proper title yet given to me by the artist but it is some kind of a space car, it looks like to me. Rhett has been experimenting with die forming and metal fabrication in his studio these long cold winter days. This first from the 2009 line from Johnson Motors seemed appropriate to introduce to you during the time of the auto show in Detroit. This vehicle is approx. 18 " long and 8" tall. Constructed of steel, copper, and brass. All parts fabricated by Rhett's hands and from his imagination.
Before the space vehicle, came these more traditional airplanes. Two to date. Approximately a bit over 3 feet wingspread and just at 3 feet long. All fabricated by hand again from steel, copper and brass. The first two airplanes were embossed with the owner's names.
A theme song for Rhett in his studio could be What's He Building? by Tom Waits. Look for it on Mule Variations cd. Great song and think of Rhett when you listen to it.

Meanwhile the artist is working on the Johnson Motors line for 2009........stay tuned.

Guardians of the homestead, part 2

Here are the other two life size human figures that Rhett fabricated out of steel and other materials. They will reside on the porch til the barn swallows return or someone chooses to "adopt" them as guardians at their own home. This one holds a staff in his right hand and is in a crouched position.
This figure is in a seated position and holds a longer staff in his left hand. This one is also up for "adoption".

Guardians of the homestead

Rhett created these life sized human figures out of steel which he coiled on a "machine" that he built himself. The faces began with wooden faces that he hand carved and then a mold was taken and this face was poured into that mold. The medallions hanging from the figures are shards of pottery , glass and stone that he has dug . Read an article written by Bill Hankins at http://homepage.mac.com/kellybuntin/files/Rhett_screen.pdf on my website. Bill talks in depth about Rhett's archeological endeavors to find art supplies. All of these figures ( and there are four) were part of a museum installation entitled "Marooned". After the show, the figures moved back to the farm. This one sat by the pond for a summer.
This figure is now seated on the freshly refinished front porch of the house where he will reside til the barn swallows return next spring.
Here is a close up of one of the faces. I will show the remaining two guardians in a future posting.
