Labor Day weekend report

How we spent our Labor day weekend. Residing the south side of our house ! Twenty years ago we put up cedar lap siding. Wanting it to weather and turn gray , we didn't put any preservative on the wood. Well, life lesson learned: it split and cracked through the years and now we were faced with replacing it. Cedar lap siding was too expensive for our piggy bank, and Rhett was itching to work with metal. Decision was made to reside the south and west sides which bore the brunt of damage. The top east side will be replaced also. Corrugated stainless steel with a two inch corrugation pattern was chosed. 29 gauge. Friday we started tearing off the old siding ( sad pile , you can see in left hand corner of image). Saturday morning we were exposed to the elements. No turning back! Worked all day Saturday , Sunday and Monday, just the two of us, hanging 20 ft long sheets of steel.
This is how it looked Monday evening. Rhett has been designing elements to hang alongside the windows as "shutters". Those will come in a week or so. It has been raining all week which helps the level of water in our pond come up and our bruises to heal but we are itching to get back at the siding project. Looks like next week will be sunny. Back to climbing the scaffolding!
This shot shows the metal details Rhett fabricated to fancy up the corners of the window trim. Larger metal details to sides of window to be added later.

Wow! That looks GREAT! That's exactly what we've been wanting to do to the garage/Maura's studio but we're having a hard time finding a supplier. Where did you get it?

Hi Jake!

Well....Rhett being the "ol horse trader that he is, traded some sky lights that he had piled up in his storage shed for the siding. It is new metal but was purchased wholesale for us. We are going to run short, so will be sourcing it ourselves now and Rhett says that he saw it somewhere in the past two weeks. Our guess is that it was TSC, the farm supply store. Will keep you posted as to where we can get it locally and the cost. Thanks for liking the look!

looks great Kelly! i'm still trying to decide what to do on the garage, but i'm leaning towards doing galvanized steel too. we found a supplier: Tin Man Bulding Supplies in Raytown. the guy that helped us, Randy, is really nice and very helpful. i think he quoted us $2.24 per linear foot for 26 gauge galvanized steel siding. hope you two are doing well :) talk to you soon ...m
